Wabun provides boys and girls with the opportunity to travel in uncomplicated ways in undisturbed areas. Campers develop confidence born of competence as they become proficient in canoe-tripping skills, and enjoy a wonderful growth in maturity, responsibility, and self-reliance through their experiences. The opportunities are rare, but still exist. Established by eight educators in 1933, four generations have now paddled Wabun-red canoes on the lakes and rivers of Temagami and northern Ontario and Quebec. The traditions of the past linger in the techniques of today with wood/canvas canoes, wannigan boxes, canvas duffle bags and leather tumplines still important ingredients in the Wabun experience. Youngest campers travel the vast lake and river systems in the Temagami region on trips ranging from five to fourteen days. Older groups take longer trips: the ultimate adventure being a six-week trip to Hudson Bay on one of the major rivers above the Arctic Divide.
