Summer Camp 2010 Employee Description

 

 SITE COUNSELLOR

Requirements of Position:

§         Willing to be a member of a dynamic staff team of employees and volunteers delivering a girl-centered, exciting camp program experience to girls within the mission, vision and values of Girl Guides of Canada.

§         Willing to live in a residential setting with children

§         Willing to participate in all training programs required for this position.

§         Available for the full duration of the camp program. (see note below)

§         Provide all required documentation (qualifications & payroll) within the set timeframes identified in letters of offer.

 

Qualifications:

• Born in 1993 or earlier (as per Ontario Camps Association Standards) although preference is given to applicants who will be 18 years of age or older on the first day of camper’s arrival due to Girl Guides of Canada, Safe Guide requirements.

• Demonstrated experience caring for children in a recreational setting preferably a residential/overnight camp setting.

• Demonstrated ability to work in a team atmosphere.

• Current throughout employment period:

o Standard First Aid including CPR C.

o Criminal Records Check to comply with the requirement of obtaining the equivalent of membership in Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada.

• Babysitting certification is an asset.

• Knowledge of the Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada program is an asset.

 

Accommodation:

                        This position will be provided with shared staff accommodation in a tent or indoor environment on campsites with the girls. No staff member will be allowed or required to share their accommodation with a camper.

 

Reports to: Section Coordinators with some supervision provided by the Program Coordinators during program activity time.

Responsibilities:

Section One: General

• Be conversant with the appropriate organizational requirements for the implementation of responsibilities. This includes but is not limited to:

§         Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada “Safe Guide”

§         Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada base program for all branches.

§         Girl Guides of Canada, Ontario Council Terms of Employment.

§         Specific summer camp program opportunities advertised for the summer program 2010.

• Actively participate as a member of the camp team and a role model in the implementation of the overall camp program. This includes activities, meals, hygiene, health and safety.

• Be an effective role model to campers and colleagues. This includes but is not limited to living the vision, mission and values of Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada, the respectful treatment of all campers/staff, compliance with all rules/regulations, maintaining a clean & safe work/living environment and general behaviour throughout the employment period.

• Actively participate in the resolution of concerns that may arise within the team or with campers and implement appropriate process for the management of such.

• Notify the Site Coordinator or Camper Care Coordinator any camper concerns as they arise.

                         

                        Section Two: Site Time & Full Camp Programming

This is defined as the time spent at the campsite or in the building with the girls when they are not involved in the overall program activities:

• As a member of the site team, ensure that campers are provided with a girl-centered program in a creative, friendly, safe and healthy manner.

• As a member of the site team, ensure that camper’s physical, social and emotional needs of security, health and safety are met through the compliance with the established camp procedures.

• As a member of the site team, ensure that the hygiene and nutrition of campers and self are met.

• Provide direct supervision to assigned campers.

• Undertake specific responsibilities within the team to ensure the assistance for all components of work are implemented. This can include but is not limited to:

§         First Aider

§         Food Services Support (Woolsey)

• Participate in the development & implementation of the on-site program and activity schedule for campers with the Site Coordinators. Ensure that a focus of the program development is on keeping the campers active and challenged throughout their time at camp. Exceed expectations.

• Comply with & implement all established camp policies and practices that are applicable to the responsibilities being undertaken.

• Actively encourage campers to participate by role modeling participation in all aspects of full camp programming and special events.

 

Section Three: Program Periods

During the implementation of these responsibilities report to the Specific Program Coordinator

This section is defined as the time spent at organized program activities specific to the camper’s interest (usually 4-5 time blocks per day). Most Site Counselor will choose the specialized areas of program they apply to work in (see list below).

§         Partner with the designated program Coordinator to implement the required program activity.

§         Supervise and participate with campers in the program area in a fun, friendly and helpful manner.

§         Implement required risk management and safety controls for the programs in a friendly way.

§         Deliver the program in an exciting, dynamic manner to capture the attention of the camper and assist in their personal skill development.

§         Facilitate campers to assist in the set up and close down of program area wherever possible and help with set up/close down with other staff if it wouldn’t be suitable for a camper to assist with these activities.

§         Encourage camper participation while supervising campers at all-camp activities.

 

Program Support Options:

SPECIAL NEEDS CAMPER ASSISTANCE:

§         Provide one-one support for campers who require additional assistance while participating in the program areas.

§         You will go to the activities that the camper goes to.

                        Doe Lake: June 26-Aug 23

                        Wyoka: June 26-Aug 22

 

 

Water Program Areas:

SWIMMING/LIFEGUARD:

• Additional Qualifications Required:

§         Minimum of one year experience implementing Swimming Lifeguard skills.

§         Current NLS certification.

§         Current Red Cross Instructor certification (mandatory at Doe Lake)

§         Swimming and Boating positions merged at Adelaide, Woolsey and Wyoka so instructors will take on the role of Swimming/Boating/Lifeguard. Boating qualifications and instruction experience preferred.

§         Canadian Coast Guard Pleasure Craft Operator Card is an asset

Adelaide*: Aug 5-22

Woolsey*: June 26-Aug 1

Doe Lake**: June 26-Aug 29

Wyoka: June 26-Aug 22

*Adelaide and Woolsey applicants should consider merging their contracts

** Some positions will end on August 22

 

BOATING INSTRUCTOR/LIFEGUARD (Doe Lake Only)

• Additional Qualifications Required:

§         Demonstrated experience in implementing Canoe Instructor and Lifeguard skills and/or in implementing Kayak Instructor and Lifeguard skills.

§         Current NLS (waterfront preferred)

§         Canadian Coast Guard Pleasure Craft Operator Card.

§         ORC(K)A Instructor levels in Canoeing and Kayaking are desired.

            Contract Dates (includes week of training):

            Doe Lake*: June 26-Aug 29

** Some positions will end on August 22

 

SAILING INSTRUCTOR/LIFEGUARD (Doe Lake only)

• Additional Qualifications Required:

§         Demonstrated experience in implementing Sailing and/or Boardsailing (minimum 50 hours and equivalent to Bronze IV level) and Lifeguard skills.

§         Current NLS (waterfront preferred)

§         Canadian Coast Guard Pleasure Craft Operator Card.

§         White Sail Coach Instructor preferred

                        Contract Dates (includes week of training):

                        Doe Lake: June 26-Aug 29

 

 

Land Program Areas:

ARTS ACTIVITIES

§         Includes crafts, visual arts, performance arts, theatre skills, and music.

§         Preference will go to individuals who have a skill set and experience in multiple disciplines.

            Contract Dates (includes week of training):

            Adelaide: Aug 5-22

            Woolsey:  June 26-Aug 1

            Doe Lake: June 26-Aug 29

            Wyoka: June 26-Aug 22

 

LAND ACTIVITIES

§         Includes sports, games, environmental programs, nature programs, archery, initiative tasks and camp skills/craft.

§         Preference will go to individuals who have a skill set and experience in multiple disciplines.

Adelaide: Aug 5-22

Woolsey: June 26-Aug 1

Doe Lake: June 26-Aug 29

Wyoka: June 26-Aug 22

 

 

ROPES/CLIMBING WALL (Adelaide, Doe Lake and Wyoka)

• Low Ropes, High Ropes and Climbing Walls experience and qualifications

• Additional Qualifications Required (Doe Lake & Wyoka):

§         Demonstrated experience in implementing High Challenge Course/Ropes/Climbing Wall instruction.

§         Challenges Unlimited Level One Ropes Certification or equivalent; Level Two preferred.

Contract Dates (includes week of training):

                        Adelaide: Aug 5-22

Doe Lake: June 26-Aug 29

Wyoka: June 26-Aug 22

 

Notes:

§         Assignment to specific program areas can be changed as required to effectively deliver the program requirements of a specific time period. This reassignment is at the discretion of the Camp Director.

§         Not all options are available at all sites.

§         It is the responsibility of the individual to obtain and retain current certification prior to the start of their employment. The cost of certification is that of the individual.

§         Girl Guides of Canada, Ontario Council reserves the right to amend this job description from time to time.
