YMCA Wanakita, located in the Haliburton Highlands on Koshlong Lake, is the four season YMCA Camp and Outdoor Centre for the YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford.  Situated 2½ hours north of Toronto on a beautiful forested 1000 acre site, Wanakita currently operates (for the 10 weeks in and around July and August) as a summer residential children's camp for 7-16 year olds, a summer day camp for 5-14 year olds and a summer family camp. From September to June, Wanakita becomes an Outdoor Education, Recreation and Retreat Centre for schools, colleges, universities, families, adults, businesses, clubs and other special interest groups. Wanakita currently serves over 150 different groups annually.

 

The site has recently been under expansion and renovation and now includes over 130 buildings and has accommodation and dining for up to 600 during the summer to 250 in winter; programs and equipment for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, high/low ropes courses, wilderness and environmental activities, crafts, performing arts and more. Also included is a newly developed 25 km trail system. With expansion, Wanakita has introduced 9 new Summer Family Camp weeks with over 400 families attending and serves and involves over 11,500 participants a year and with expansion will move to 14,000 annually. Currently employed are 12 full time staff with seasonal staff support ranging from 12 - 180 employees. Over 250 volunteers/ year are also involved.


Nature & Scope:

 

The Fall Outdoor Centre Program Instructor is a seasonal position responsible for delivering recreational and educational programs throughout the season (August 29th - October 24th, 2011).  The instructor is primarily responsible for the set-up and delivery of programs (canoeing, kayaking, high ropes, initiatives, archery, environmental programs, out trips) and site support.   The Program Instructor will report directly to the Program Coordinator under the supervision of the Outdoor Centre Director.

 

 

Responsibilities:

 

-         Facilitate programs for school, adult, family and other special interest groups during week days and weekends;

-          Act as the liaison with teachers, group leaders and other small staff teams;

-         Provide site support  including set up of all program areas and maintenance of trails and program equipment as well as assisting the site service staff in general site maintenance in and around the YMCA Wanakita Outdoor Centre;

-      Maintain continuity and quality in programs by working co-operatively with all groups and other non-program Wanakita staff.

 

Qualifications:

 

-      Minimum certifications in Standard First Aid , CPR C and NLS;

-      ORCKA Flatwater Instructor is considered an asset;

-      Challenge Course Practitioner Certificate from and ACCT accredited trainer is considered an asset;

-      Pleasure Craft Operator's Card;

-      Previous experience in camp/outdoor education/recreation         field;

Current Vulnerable Sector Screening is a condition of
