LEADERS COUNSELLOR (LIT Program)

 

POSITION PURPOSE

The Leaders Counsellor is an integral part to the delivery of Camp Daverns 2 year leadership program.  The Leaders Counsellor is an experienced camp staff person, is a role model for other staff and has the skills necessary to provide program and supervision to Leadership campers.  The Leaders Counsellor lives on-site when camp is in session and during the required pre-camp training. This is an important position as it is training our future Camp Davern Staff.

 

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Camp Davern experience is based on the building of a camp community.  The camp community is supportive of all participants, staff and families and provides opportunities for growth and learning for all in spirit, mind and body.  Camp Davern Leadership Counsellors are leaders in the camp community to campers and play an important role in the Davern Staff Team.

 

The Leaders Counsellor:

-Is a responsible role model at camp and is aware that this continues throughout the year 

-Demonstrates respectful and caring relationships with staff and campers

-Is camper centered and focused on the needs of our participants

-Puts the greater good of our participants experience at the forefront in every decision made

-Teaches and role models the core values of the National Capital Region YMCA-YWCA
-
Understands and practices the Camp Davern policies and procedures

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Leaders Counsellor is expected to:

-Plan and deliver an effective, fun, creative and safe Leadership Training program

-Use provided guidelines and resources to deliver Leaders Program

-Ensure that campers basic needs are attended to: personal hygiene, sunscreen, bug spray, hats, hydration, nutrition, sleep and rest, medications etc...
-
Participate and help program camp-wide activities

-Manage the cabin group dynamics to ensure a positive physical and emotional experience for all campers

-Develop individual relationships with each participant

-Create a supportive, communicative and cooperative relationship with other staff

-Seek out support from other staff members, resource staff and director as required.

-Work with the Counseling Coordinator and Program Coordinator to place participants in appropriate placements.

-Supervise Leadership Participants while they are in their placements and provide them with support and resources

-Set goals, have a mid-session check-in and provide final feedback to each participant in the Leaders program

 

The Leaders Counsellor may be asked to assist in duties not listed above. 

 

 QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

-  Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C

-  NLS

-CUI Level 1 or 2

-ORCA Basic Instructor

- Lifesaving Instructors an asset

  Minimum 3 years counseling experience

-Minimum 2 years supervisory experience in a camp setting or in youth recreation

Tripping Experience (ORCA Level 2 an asset)

- Clear Criminal Record Check 

-Attend and participate in 100% of staff training
